Our mission is engaging community and faith based organizations in ending homelessness one family at a time. Family Promise of Genesee County keeps families together during a housing crisis, by working with a network of churches and houses of worship.
Family Promise of Genesee County is a shelter serving families facing a housing crisis. We are a local affiliate of a national organization. Nationally, Family Promise began in 1986. Locally, we’ve been serving families since 2014. Our focus is working with the families to help them transition from a temporary housing crisis into a sustainable living situation. (For additional information on the national Family Promise program, visit its website just click here.)
Network Host Churches/Houses of Worship host our guest families for one week at a time, approximately once a quarter. We also have a network of churches/houses of worship which act as support churches to the hosts. Together, our affiliate churches/houses of worship provide shelter, support and food for families during their crisis.
Family Promise of Genesee County is funded entirely through grants, both community and judicatory, and fundraisers. The Family Promise model operates at about 1/3 of the cost of a traditional shelter, because churches/houses of worship volunteer to provide the physical shelter at night, additionally they meet the food needs of our families. Roughly 90% of our budget is directly connected to programming.
While with Family Promise of Genesee County, guest families are connected with several life-skill class opportunities. The agencies we work with donate their time and talent to help our families. The State Bank of Fenton conducts a budgeting course. Catholic Charities provides parenting classes with several different courses topics to meet a family’s specific needs. We also partnered with the Genesee Landlords Association to offer a class on landlord/tenant relations to prepare. Those life-skill classes happen at our Day Center.
Our Day Center is located inside Calvary United Methodist Church, in Flint. We rent space to house our Network Director and Case Manager’s office as well as our families, during the daytime hours. Guest families have access to computers and phones as well as one-on-one case management to help them define, track and achieve their goals. Families also have access to laundry facilities and showers, while at the Day Center. Thanks to generous donations and grant funding, all of the guest family’s household needs are also met.
Family Promise of Genesee County accepts up to five families, or 14 people, at one time. This program size allows us to be responsive to a family’s specific need. Adults in guest families are required to pass a drug screen and submit to a background check before program entry. The average family stay is about 65 days.
